Job Opportunity: Operations Manager

The Society of Labour Lawyers (SLL) is seeking an Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day running of the society and implement the Executive Committee’s vision for SLL.  

As the society is expanding, both in membership size and activities, we are seeking a full or part-time member of staff to facilitate the society’s continual growth.

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract. There may be an option for renewal, which will be assessed towards the end of the 12 months. 

The Job 

Hours: Up to 35 hours a week

Hours are flexible but you will need to be available to triage urgent advice enquires that come in during the working day. On occasion there will be some evening and weekend work necessary.  

In busier periods, such as around Labour Party Conference, paid overtime will be required.

This includes candidates looking for a full-time role or a part-time role of 3-4 days a week. We are also happy to consider candidates interested in a smaller part time role (i.e. 2 days a week), which we will consider as a job share.

Pay: Equivalent to £28,000-£30,000 (experience dependent) full time per annum, pro rata.  
 
Place of work: Most work will be done remotely, other than attending and managing SLL events (likely London-based), and Labour Party Conference.  
 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Developing and implementing projects set by the Officers;  
  • Managing the membership database, dealing with membership queries effectively and producing membership communications;  
  • Managing the Parliamentary Labour Party Advice Scheme, through being the first point of call for parliamentary staffers and directing them to our members where appropriate;  
  • Supporting practice area groups and regional groups to hold events and produce legal pamphlets; 
  • Organising and minuting various SLL meetings including EC meetings and the AGM; 
  • Co-ordinating and organising events, including for Labour Party Conference; 
  • Managing and organising the fundraising activities of the society; 
  • Curating the wider communications of the society and updating the society’s online assets, including its website and social media; 
  • Stakeholder management including professional bodies, socialist societies and the Labour Party; 
  • Fundraising for new and continued revenue streams for the society;  
  • Other related tasks as may be requested by the Officers & EC. 

The Candidate 
 

Essential skills and experience: 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; 
  • Strong ability to work independently and on own initiative; 
  • Good administrative, organisational and IT skills; 
  • Excellent time management and ability to prioritise competing tasks and manage a significant workload; 
  • Political knowledge, particularly within the Labour Party;  
  • Interest in legal issues; 
  • Commitment to the objectives and values of the Society of Labour Lawyers. 

Desirable skills and experience: 

  • Experience of organising and managing events; 
  • Experience of working with MPs; 
  • Experience of website maintenance and social media work; 
  • Experience of working with a membership organisation; 
  • Experience of using a CRM system; 
  • Experience of fundraising;  
  • Networks within the Labour Party.
