April Chair’s Report

This month SLL have hosted a number of events including our Access to Justice roundtable at Middle Temple with Shadow Justice Secretary, Steve Reed MP. It was focused on the policies we need to enable access to justice for all & may have seen the birth of a National Legal Service.

There was also a Family Roundtable with Helen Hayes MP, Shadow Minister for Children and Early Years & Alex Cunningham MP, Shadow Minister for Courts and Sentencing.

We also had another mentoring event – which ran as a hybrid workshop. A huge thank you to all the members who volunteered to help.

For the first time SLL submitted consultation responses to each of the six National Policy Forum’s Commissions, coordinated by our NPF Representative Dan Jones and our SLL Groups.

SLL has also been providing lots of legal advice to the Shadow Front Bench this month. Particular thanks to the Crime Group, as they have seen multiple requests in relation to Sentencing for Assaults on Prison Staff & Court Fines amongst others. We have also seen requests in relation to Lifetime Allowances, which was announced in the last budget.

SLL were also able to attend a Trade Union Conference event in the East Midlands, as part of the wider Socialist Societies.
