SLL Chair’s Report – January 2022

It’s been a busy start to the year for the Society of Labour Lawyers.

We launched our Crumbling Criminal Justice calendar in Parliament with Home Office Shadow Minister Holly Lynch MP raising awareness of the decrepit state of our criminal courts whilst raising money for Justice and the Howard League for Penal Reform. See the Labour List article here.

We had our first quarterly meeting with the new shadow justice team, Shadow Justice Minister Steve Reed, Shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry and Shadow Solicitor General Andy Slaughter.

We met with Ellie Reeves from the shadow justice team on the Human Rights Act Reform Consultation and also met with members working on the SLL response to the consultation.

We met with Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

We met with Shadow Defence MinisterJohn Healey about his Dossier of Waste in the Ministry of Defence.

We spoke with Emily Thornberry Shadow Attorney General about the Metropolitan Police’s request for Sue Gray to restrict publication of her report on the Parties in Downing Street.

We selected our future mentees for SLL’s Mentoring Scheme which was very difficult having had so many impressive applications.
